First Day – New Job
As Recruiters, we spend a lot of time and effort in finding great jobs for great candidates and building a strong relationship with these candidates along the way. I would honestly suggest that our candidates become friends 90% of the time.
Once all that hard works done and they’ve got that perfect job, the realization of the dreaded first day hits and the vast majority of people can get a little anxious – or maybe a lot anxious! And it’s horrible to see these people we’ve become close to, going through those “first day nerves” and anxious feeling. It really reminds me of sending the kids off on the first day of a new school – or even just a new term.
Starting a new job is always a bit unsettling. It’s natural to feel anxious about the unknown and to doubt yourself – even though you’ve proven yourself to be more than capable in the recruitment process.
But first days on the job are the same for everyone, filled with meeting new coworkers, getting oriented to the office space, and filling out paperwork. They are rarely great days to be honest, and it’s important to manage your expectations of them. I remember the first day working for a large recruitment company where I was so overwhelmed and full of self-doubt. I went home and cried that night. But it turned out to be one of the best jobs I ever had. (Not as good as working for 100% IT Recruitment of course)!!!!!
The nerves and doubts may seem overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that this first day is just the first of many – days 2 and onwards during the first week, are much more pleasant. And despite any initial uneasiness, it will all be worth it in the end when you’re successfully settled into your new job, with new challenges and thriving in your career. So, take a deep breath, go into your first day with an open mind, and enjoy the exciting journey ahead.
Just remember to do the basics well and go with the flow!
First of all, be sure to arrive early and dressed for success. You’ll want to make a good impression on your new boss and colleagues. Be prepared for a whirlwind of activity, as your new team will undoubtedly bombard you with questions and they’ll be lots of new things to learn. Take it all in stride; this is all part of the learning process. By the end of the day, you’ll have a good idea of what your role within the company is and where you fit in. And if you finish your first day in a daze and thinking, “what have I done” – “take me back to my old comfy job and comfy company”, remember you are not alone in this, and it really is the norm. But your horrible First Day is just one day but it is also the door to self-improvement, new challenges and moving on with your career!
